Fruit Fly Trap FAQsUpdated 8 months ago
How do I get rid of fruit flies?
To deal with fruit flies, the best strategy is as follows:
- Remove all food sources: any and all mature fruit and vegetables should be sealed and stored where they are inaccessible to the fruit flies.
- Regularly empty the trash, and keep trash cans covered.
- Clean spills immediately, especially from fruit juices, beer or wine.
- Trap the mature adults so that they cannot reproduce.
We recommend using our Sweet Surrender Fruit Fly Trap, to catch the mature adults. The unique composition of this product has proven to be up to 10 times as effective as apple cider vinegar in luring and trapping fruit flies.
What attracts fruit flies?
Fruit flies are attracted to ripe, fermenting or decaying fruit and vegetables, as well as fermented beverages like wine and beer. They're drawn by the odor of yeasts and acetic acid produced during fermentation.
How does the Fruit Fly Trap catch fruit flies?
The Fruit Fly Trap is more than just another bug trap: our patented design is engineered with every detail considered.
The trap's patented vent lines are calibrated to perfection, allowing just the right amount of aroma to escape. These lines serve as pathways, directing fruit flies to their ultimate destination. Even the entrance holes at the end of each vent line are meticulously sized to be inviting only to our targeted pests.
In short, it's a trap engineered for efficiency. Partnered with our unique Sweet Surrender formula, designed with a lower surface tension to keep the flies from alighting on top of the liquid's surface, you have a fruit fly-catching sweet spot, if you will.
How long does Sweet Surrender last?
Once opened, Sweet Surrender will last up to 6 weeks. Unopened and stored as indicated in a cool, dark place, it lasts for 2 years from the manufacture date, listed on the container.
Various factors, such as heat, air flow and light exposure can affect the longevity of the attractant. We encourage you to use your discretion and change it out if the container is becoming overly full of insects, or if you feel it should be changed for any other reason.
The Fruit Fly Trap can be reused indefinitely, and refills of the Sweet Surrender can be purchased separately.
What is the best location for the Fruit Fly Trap?
The best location to set your trap is in a place where the fruit flies tend to hang out the most. This may be a matter of trial and error, until you find the sweet spot.
Since they are attracted to light and the smell of mature fruit, this tends to be on a windowsill or near fruit on a countertop.
You can alslo try different spots within your kitchen to find the most effective location for the trap in your particular environment.
Will the fruit fly trap attract gnats and drain flies?
Sweet Surrender is designed to attract fruit flies, not drain flies or gnats. It targets the fruit fly, also known as the vinegar fly or pomace fly. It may randomly catch a few other flying insects, but the fruit fly is the one that will specifically be drawn in.
You can tell fruit flies apart from gnats and drain flies by their rounded bodies and brown color. Gnats resemble mosquitoes with longer bodies and legs and are black; drain flies have fuzzy bodies similar to moths.
